About Young Voices
Our mission is to provide Hawaii's young singers with the unique opportunity to explore the world of solo voice performance. With group workshops, masterclasses, one-on-one sessions, as well as performance & critiquing opportunities, singers grow as artists, make contacts, and improve themselves as performers. Workshops will cover topics such as: use of the voice, diction, acting/movement, interpretation, stage combat, performance practice, and more!
• Young Voices students will work with members of the Hawaii Opera Theatre staff as well as local artists and professionals flown in specifically to work with them. In recent years the studio has had artists such as Timothy Shaindlin from Yale, professional singers Jake and Jill Gardner, Diane Alexander, Mark Morash of the San Francisco Opera Center, professional singers Louis Otey and Maria Todaro-Otey, singer and Metropolitan Opera soprano Erie Mills, and others. The program ends with a concert by Young Voices members in March.
• Weekend workshops will be held over the year and in addition there will be periodic masterclasses with opera/musical theater professionals offered as well as invitations to performances.
• COST: The program is offered at no cost through a generous grant from the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation.
• Applications for the 2024/2025 program are now being accepted.
